The HOTO! The Occoquan Boat Club sponsors one of the largest end of season regattas in the United States. The annual Head of the Occoquan is held at Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax, Virginia. River City Crew competed on Sunday, November 7th from 8:00AM-4:00PM on the Occoquan Reservoir.
The Head of the Occoquan (HOTO) course is considered one of the most challenging courses in the country. Its many turns ensures that crews and athletes that understand the course and the rules cut significant amount of time from their result.
Regatta: Registration - 8AM
Coach & Cox Meeting - 8AM
Our 1st race start - 10:30AM Women's Eights (Launch at about 9:45AM)
Men's Fours start - 11:15AM
Women's Fours start - 12:45PM
Men's Eights start - 1:15PM
ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE: All rowers need to arrive early to prepare for their events. Please plan to provide individual transportation (or carpools) for your rower on Sunday morning to race! Cars bringing rowers should plan to arrive at the parking lots by 7:30AM to have time to carry gear, etc. and report to the Coach at the trailer no later than 8:00AM. There may be shuttles from the parking lots to the dock, but be prepared to walk a good distance. There is a parking fee of approx. $10 per car. It will be much more crowded than the last Occoquan regatta, so parking & walking in will take longer.
River City Crew's first race starts at 10:30 AM but it takes a minimum of 1/2 hour to get to the starting line, so figure our first race will launch at about 9:45AM. Your rower should plan to be at the Park through the medals ceremony and to de-rig and load boats, which could be as late as 4:00-5:00PM.
NOTE TO PARENTS: Occoquan is a beautiful location for a regatta. All parents, family & friends are encouraged to attend to watch & cheer on their rowers in action with plenty of viewing room along the Occoquan Reservoir. We suggest parents bring a chair, something to read for down time, dress in layers & wear good walking shoes to make your day more enjoyable. Many families send the rowers up in carpools & then spectators come later, as the rowers need to be there very early to unload and rig boats, register, etc. Parents bringing tents & tables, please arrive on the early side! NO PETS & NO ALCOHOL will be permitted.
