Head Coach Tom O'Rourke began rowing as an adult with the Rivanna Rowing Club ("RRC") in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1990. After completing a Learn-to-Row program, Tom began rowing in the masters program and advanced to stroking the masters' sweep boats. He started sculling in his second year of rowing and eventually switched almost exclusively to single and double rowing.
During his time at RRC and now, as a member of Virginia Boat Club ("VBC"), Tom has competed in many regattas, both head and sprint racing, and has won a number of medals. He still competes as a member of VBC since moving to the Richmond area in 2004.
While at RRC, Tom taught sculling and was active in the management and governance of the club. In 2006, after moving to Richmond, Tom became a founding member of what is now River City Crew, (formerly North Mooreland Rowing Club) and agreed to act as a volunteer head coach.
In 2009, at the request of the team parents and Board, Tom agreed to move into a full-time position as Executive Director and Head Coach of River City Crew. While remaining as head coach Tom has introduced a great many high school students to rowing and witnessed his crews win medals from the inception of the program.
